MBA. It is more than a degree.

The Master of Business Administration is a postgraduate that is internationally recognized as a business management qualification. But it is more than an academic degree. A good mba is preparation for business management involving a combination of practical training and theoretical learning. The MBA has a unique result-focused and interdisciplinary approach, which makes it popular among the worldwide business establishment. It is not seen as just a degree, it is more of a lifestyle and a philosophy. Some people, particularly those tasked with recruiting for companies in the UK, seem to lump the MBA with other academic degrees. The MBA is actually a generic program allowing for a high amount of flexibility. The core component of the MBA features courses in finance, economics, accounting, marketing, organizational behaviour, operational management (logistics), business law, information management and technology and human resource management amongst others.

The elective component of the course allows students the freedom to select the courses that particularly interest them. Thus you have the core courses to address the needs of every manager then the elective courses that address the individual's professional needs. Different programs offer different electives, but you should find that each course would focus either on a particular aspect of business administration, or a region in the world, or a particular industry. Thus a student may be choosing from e-commerce, entrepreneurship, business in Europe, derivatives, business and the environment, and many others.

An MBA course sees students coming from different cultural and professional backgrounds coming together to share experiences and expertise in a highly stimulating learning environment. What is an MBA course? A passport to a successful management career, the Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree is the most popular postgraduate degree in the world. Each year in the USA more than 90,000 MBAs graduate, and in the UK more than 10,000 graduate each year. This makes the United Kingdom the highest producer of MBAs outside the USA.

Differences in MBA courses around the world are many. For instance, in the USA, the courses are generally two years in length, but the majority of courses in Europe take twelve months to complete, although that varies from 10 months to two years. There are thousands of universities and colleges all over the world that offer the MBA at the moment. Lifestyles are changing and globalisation is increasing, which means that these schools have to offer more flexible learning methods. For instance, you can study full-time where you take that time off work to go into business school every day. Part-time courses allow you to work full-time whilst taking your MBA course either in the evenings or over weekend modules. Even though these can take up to five years it does mean your life is busier as you are working full time in addition to lectures and coursework. Then there is distance learning - which can be done through CD-Roms, printed materials and even fully online - whichever way suits you the most. Whatever type of course deliver you are looking for, the right programme is out there. You can even get your MBA with your employer as they offer the course as part of their internal career development programme. Strong alliances have been developed with management colleges and business schools so that top talent can be developed and retained. However, there is a massive diversity in quality between programmes, you need to make the right choice to ensure that your time and your money is not wasted. This is why you must take the time to research MBA courses as much as possible. Employers do care where you got your MBA from, so make sure the school is accredited (AMBA, EQUIS, AACSB) and ask around to ascertain their reputation. Get it right and it is the perfect avenue to making more money

MBA Distance Learning - Know Your Facts

So you're ready to pursue your Master of Business Administration degree. You've done most of your homework, found a number of online college programs that offer an MBA degree, but now it's time to get down to the specifics. Most people have lots of questions that need to be answered about obtaining an MBA degree, so let's get started.

Most business schools, as well as major universities, both online and off, offer Master of Business Administration degrees. Today, more than ever before, students seeking any Master's degree are doing so online, most often because it affords a flexibility not found in traditional brick and mortar college campuses and coursework schedules. In this method, full coursework loads are sent to students who then develop their own pace for completing required coursework and exams requirements.

Today, nearly 93% of students attending online colleges for an MBA degree work full time, and nearly 81% serve in management positions. That doesn't leave a lot of extra study time, but determination and focus offer the drive necessary to earn degrees in spare time. While many older adults are now pursuing Master's degrees online, most men and women doing so are around 35 years old and have been employed in the workplace for at least 10 years. What does this say? It says that the value of education, especially a Master's degree, of any type, will offer many in the business and science world the opportunity to step up the ladder of success.

Keep in mind that there are many jobs and careers that don't require employees or management staff to hold a Master's degree, so if you're earning one for employment, and not self-improvement reasons, make sure that your time and money will be well spent in the pursuit of one. Today, most students seeking an MBA degree are already employed in government, manufacturing, IT, finance, self-employment and consulting positions, just to name a few.

Most MBA online degree programs allow students to specialize in various fields, so take the time to do a little research and determine the best program to suit your needs and personal desires. Most students will spend approximately 3-4 years to complete coursework in order to obtain their Master's, but that's just a general, and some take longer, while others may take less time. Fees will vary depending on the online campus you choose as well as your specialty. When seeking the right college for you, determine the availability of financial aid and student support, and take the time to seek scholarships and grants when needed. Seeking a Master of Business Administration degree won't be easy, and it certainly won't be cheap, but it will be more than worth your efforts in the long run when compared to an increase of earning power and reputation. However, you must be able to work independently and pursue your coursework goals with a minimum of student/instructor assistance, so those who are serious about their goals will achieve the best results from this type of learning method.

Should a College Student MBA Expect Founders Stock in a Startup High Tech Company?

Not long ago I met an intense young man, college student working on his business degree and he decided that he really liked a project that we were working on. He decided after many emails that he in fact wanted to be a co-founder along with myself and another gentleman and asked the unreasonable question, can I be a founder too, entitling him to Founder's Stock and a hefty paycheck. The answer might surprise you, as I replied:

If your expertise and creative genius shows thru then it makes sense to have you on board as founding member. I do not have the final say, it must be mutually agreed upon with the other founder and if we are set on slicing the VC (venture capitalist) into huge chuck of the Pizza, we ought to be talking to him as well pretty early on. Of course, all this discussion is based on performance, therefore if your abilities, hard work ethic and great ideas fit the entrepreneurial start-up scenario, that makes sense of course.

The fact of the matter is that indeed, I would love to clone myself and once I think it is feasible that will be a start-up business for me in the future, right now, I have to find out of the box thinkers who can still live in the real world when dealing with all the rest of the business community and the persnickety customer base we will surely generate - easier said that done.

If I like his ideas and they are good, then it makes sense. These ideas must also allow for making money, providing a world-class product and good strategies to dodge the landmines and exit smoothly, then we definitely need him in a big way. Of course, the other founder needs to make that decision, if he asks me what I think; I think then yes, I believe the college student would be a good team member.

When reviewing this scenario, it seems the if we come to a good understanding, solid plan and agree to the plan then the college student will have lots of control. The funders of this project also have control and they are very much part of the success of the team, because they come with a team of their own which may have done this 50 times before and they know the ropes.

When using this as a case study we must remember that no one is part of the Team, since there is no team yet, we have to work out a plan and sit down and agree upon it, if the college student is volunteering to help design the plan and tailor it then it makes sense. Indeed we must be cognizant of the needs of the investors too, as we can use their team of lawyers, human resource people, industry contacts, then it surely makes sense to have an "inside guy" of the VC on the executive team. We have to work with them; most start-ups get the money, and hold the check until they talk to their lawyers; that is no way to play your investors, especially down the road when the going gets good.

Do you know why the US will not go to war with China? Our economies and mutual goals are intermingled; think on it, again, sorry for all the philosophy on this simple case study, but my mind just does that.

You know the other founder may simply say he does not like the way it is being planned, if we cannot come to a strategy to agree on, he might decide to opt out, then plan B. In reality, as far as I am concerned, I have enough friends, contacts, etc. to get all this done on my own, but I have been down that bumpy road before, it takes a lot out of you, sure you can do it. Why re-invent the wheel when you have a VC who has cleared a four-lane highway on the cover of Ayn Rand's Fountain Head re-prints. Remember Together Everyone Accomplishes More.

L. Winslow is an Economic Advisor to the Online Think Tank, a Futurist and retired entrepreneur http://www.worldthinktank.netCurrently he is planning a bicycle ride across the US to raise money for charity and is sponsored by http://www.Calling-Plans.com and all the proceeds will go to various charities who sign up.

How to use Economic News For IIM MBA GD-PI Topics

One of the crucial aspects of preparation for the IIM GD/PI round of admission
test is a good understanding of the economy.

Now you only need to know whats happening in the economy and dont have to be
an expert at economics which is a separate field of study itself, unless you are
a Commerce or Economics graduate. The most burning issue facing non Commerce candidates
such as engineers and arts graduates is understanding the basic information of the
economy. Here are some tips that may help.

1) Break down the economy: Prepare smart- that's the key. First break down the
economy into its components. You can start by focussing on 15 topics - Construction,
Exports, Foreign Exchange, Agriculture, etc...identify 3 topics from each 15 to
get started

2) Don't immediately read the Editorial section: Most people choose to start
by going into the heavy duty editorial section. That is best for those who have
been following the issue for some time and already have a good idea of the issue.
Start with your 45 chosen topics and skim through the newspapers to identify the
3 most latest news related to that topics

3) Now you have 135 pieces of information on specific areas of the economy. Now
all you need to do is prepare these 135 pieces of information and get a group of
5 people to conduct mock GD and Personal interviews. Ask your mom or dad to supervise
to make it serious and add that element of pressure to perform well

Through repetition you will hone your skills and be able to remember the topics
that you have selected without having to keep written notes. Do remember to practice
as that will drive down that information to long term memory.

Strong preparation is the key to success in the

IIM Group Discussion and Personal Interview
, get started and you will gain

The New Ways To Do The business: MBA or CIO?

The old and standard business administration concepts included in any current MBA program are very important, but today the companies are very different.

This new situation strong demands a new MBA program including the General Control Theory, the control engineering, the new business technologies, the Management by Exception concept automated by computer systems, the Feedback Control System and several other subjects like Internet Marketing & Sales.

As we know the CIO is the abbreviation of "Chief Information Officer" and is a new professional, usually between the CEO and the other Directors including the IT Director. He don't replace the IT Director, with the exception in small companies.

A CIO Chief Information Officer has entrepreneurial experience and at the same time technical experience in Information Technologies. The entrepreneur usually has only the entrepreneurial experience and the IT manager has only on technical matters. However business is more and more the information system and the information system is more and more the business.

The companies are more and more electronics, as for examples the ERP Enterprise Resources Planning, the CRM Customer Relationship Management, the Voice over IP VoIP, the sophisticated Call Centers, Business Intelligence BI, the Internet, the new Internet Marketing, etc. Therefore, to survive a modern business administrator must learn those new ways to do the business and how to manage those modern enterprises.

In other words, the current MBA will be substituted by a CIO in a very short period of time. And a recent report from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the primary accrediting body in North America lambasted its members for maintaining a curriculum that is out of touch with modern business practices. As a matter of fact, the current MBA it's an 60-years old curriculum in the begin of this digital age.

Do You Need an MBA to Run a Successful Business, or Vision?

Is a strong vision for your business more important than an MBA? Should you go
to school or go to the school of hard knocks?

When the cost for an MBA ranges from $15,000 to $50,000, you need to consider
whether the traditional MBA program will meet your needs as a business owner.

First, please keep in mind that most business school programs are not designed
to teach you how to start a business, but how to contribute to running and managing
an existing large company. Starting a business from scratch requires a completely
    different skill set.

So, why even bother going to business school?

Business school can provide you with some very strong theoretical skills, including
the ability to read and understand financial statements, as well as understanding
market trends and economic theory. Most importantly, an MBA program can help you
develop relationships with mentors and others that can help you build your business
    down the road.

It can also give you an inflated image of your entrepreneurial abilities.

The last thing I want to do is discourage anyone form pursuing an education,
as a college education can be a valuable tool. If you are pursuing a career, an
MBA has been proven to help you command a higher salary.

Unfortunately, I have seen absolutely no correlation between educational level
and success when it comes to running a business. In fact, in the last ten years
I have spent helping business owners grow their businesses, I have never found a
college education to make a difference in business success.

The deciding factor in the success or failure of a business owner has absolutely
nothing to do with education level.

It is the strength of the business vision.

Successful business owners have a plan. They know what they want for themselves
and their business, and they do whatever it takes to make it happen. They have a
strong vision in front of them at all times-a picture in their minds of where there
business will be next year, five years from now, and beyond.

If they don't know how to read a financial statement or run a marketing campaign,
they find someone who can. They don't let education or a lack of education stand
in the way of growing their business.

They just do whatever it takes.

Creating a successful business is rarely a straight path. Two steps forward and
one step back is normal. Business owners with vision are the ones that don't get
caught in those backwards steps. In fact, they tend to brush them off quickly, refocus,
and take a bigger step forward. Successful business owners are not afraid to admit
    they don't know everything.

This is not a trait of the typical MBA graduate.

Successful business owners are always looking to make themselves and their business
    better, faster and stronger.

If you want a career in business, by all means pursue an MBA. If you have a personal
goal to get your Masters Degree, an MBA is a great choice. Just don't be surprised
to find that you have a lot more to learn when it comes to being an entrepreneur.

Find a mentor, or a business group that can help you along the way. The best
teachers are the ones that have already created a successful business. Regardless
of how you pursue your education, just remember to never stop learning.

Success is a journey, not a goal. Your business vision is your guidebook.

    Use it.

Business (And Highway) 101 - Skip The MBA And Buy A Motorcycle

.) Soichiro Honda - Lesson: Find your own way

The son of a village blacksmith, Honda was exposed to bicycles when they were
brought into his father's shop for repair. He had only a primary school education,
but showed a striking aptitude for both engineering and business. Before starting
the Honda Motor Company to make motorized bicycles in postwar Japan, he had already
built up two successful businesses, one supplying piston rings to Toyota, and another
making propellers for the Japanese air force.

Mr. Honda was anything but a typical Japanese businessman. A rugged individualist,
he refused to participate in the "keiretsu" alliances between companies, which typically
gave big banks a strong influence in business decisions. When virtually all Japanese
motorbikes had noisy, smelly two-stroke motors he decided to make a four-stroke.
That typified a willingness to plan and invest for long-term success even if it
meant ignoring prevailing "wisdom." One of the motorcycles that benefited from that
insight was the Super Cub step-through. It was introduced in 1958 and is still produced
almost unmodified today. Honda recently sold the 50 millionth Super Cub, making
it the best selling vehicle of all time.

2.) George Hendee - Lesson: You don't need to know, you need to know what you
    need to know

Hendee was one of the most successful bicycle racers in Massachusetts at the
turn of the century - at one point, he won 302 races out of 309! He started a company
making his own bicycles, which sold well, thanks to his racing reputation.

Many of the very first motorcycles were "pacers" used to train bicycle racers.
They were typically unreliable but Hendee noticed that Oscar Hedstrom's ran very
well. In 1901, Hendee approached Hedstrom and told him that his dream was to start
a company devoted to making motorized bicycles. They called their company Indian,
and in short order it was America's leading motorcycle manufacturer. In 1912, Indian
    sold over 20,000 units.

3.) Arthur Davidson - Lesson: Support your product after the sale

While his friend Bill Harley and to a lesser extent the other Davidson brothers
provided the technical know-how, the early business success of Harley-Davidson was
largely due to Arthur Davidson. In 1910 he set out to enroll a national network
of dealers. He also recognized the importance of factory-training for dealer service
staff, and the importance of advertising if H-D was ever to surpass Indian in annual
    sales.

    4.) Vaughn Beals - Lesson: Quality-control rules

By the mid-'70s after years of AMF mismanagement, Harley-Davidson had lost almost
all customer loyalty and profits were in freefall. When a group of company executives
led by Vaughn Beals offered to buy the division for $75 million, AMF quickly agreed.

After the 1981 leveraged buyout, Beals led an amazing corporate turnaround. He
funded new product development and implemented world-class quality control. It's
impossible to know what would have happened to the H-D brand if Beals had not risen
up to save it, but it's certain that no one else could have done a better job at
    rehabilitating it.

5.) John Bloor - Lesson: Never underestimate the value of your brand, never take
    it for granted

Like Harley-Davidson, Triumph was a company that had fallen on hard times - more
than once. In the 1920s the company made an ill-fated move to produce cars as well
and in 1936 an entrepreneur named Jack Sangster drove a hard bargain, acquiring
the motorcycle business at a good price. Sangster's business instincts nearly make
him worthy of a place on this list, too. He hired the brilliant Edward Turner and
after turning a handsome profit on sales, sold the company to BSA for another big
    payday in 1951.

From the mid-'70s through the mid-'80s Triumph died an agonizingly slow death.
The brand would have vanished altogether had John Bloor, a real estate developer,
not bought the old factory in Meriden. Against all advice, Bloor decided to build
a new factory in nearby Hinckley. He spent millions designing new motorcycles that
were unveiled at the Cologne Motorcycle Show in 1990. While those first "new" Triumphs
got mixed reviews, the company has shown a remarkable willingness to go its own
way, producing a line of unique machines that once again have earned it a devoted
    fan base.j

6.) Count Domenico Agusta - Lesson: Follow your passion

This Italian Count ran MV Agusta during its heyday between the end of WWII and
the early '70s. During that time, the company was really a helicopter manufacturer
with a small motorcycle subsidiary. The road-going motorcycles they made would never
warrant including the Count on this list, but thanks to his own fierce pride and
competitive streak, the company also funded the greatest Grand Prix racing team
    of all time.

When the Japanese factories began to dominate in the late '60s, they drove out
most of the Italian marques. By lavishing funds from the helicopter business on
his racing team, Agusta single-handedly preserved Italian racing honor.

7.) Malcolm Forbes - Lesson: It's not what you know, it's who you know

Forbes was the son of America's first business magazine publisher. After heroic
service in WWII, he came home to work at Forbes Magazine, although he nearly became
the Governor of New Jersey - he won the Republican nomination but lost the election.
So what does running Forbes Magazine have to do with motorcycles? Nothing.

Forbes discovered motorcycling in the 1960s. He bought a motorcycle dealership
in New Jersey, which became one of the biggest shops in the country. Using his high-level
business connections, he worked tirelessly to establish motorcycle riding as a respectable
pastime. He was an extremely effective political lobbyist always ready to defend
motorcycling from legal assault. With his media-savvy background, he managed to
plant scores of motorcycle stories in the mainstream media. The social acceptability
of motorcycles today owes much to Malcolm Forbes.

8.) Floyd Clymer - Lesson: If at first you do succeed, try again anyway

Clymer was already famous as a young teenager - at 13 (in 1909) he was the youngest
Ford dealer in the country! He went on to become a winning motorcycle racer and
soon had a dealership for Harley-Davidson and Excelsior motorcycles in his home
state of Colorado. He was an innovative marketer and one of the first people to
sell motorcycles to police departments and delivery businesses. In his early 20s
he began publishing his first motorcycle magazine.

His career was put on hold when he served a year in federal prison for mail fraud.
He had been offered a chance to plead guilty and avoid prison altogether but he
always claimed he was innocent and refused to admit a crime he didn't commit. When
he got out of prison he took over the distribution of Indian motorcycles on the
west coast. Here again, he had marketing savvy, arranging for Indian motorcycles
to appear in films and lending them to Hollywood stars. When Indian faltered in
the '50s, Clymer desperately tried to save the brand but failed. He also was briefly
the importer of the eyebrow-raising Munch Mammoth motorcycle.

Last but not least, he was the publisher of Cycle Magazine from the early '50s
to the mid-'60s and ran a very successful business publishing motorcycle repair
    manuals.

9.) George Barber - Lesson: Always remember where you came from

Barber was a sports car racer who gave up the track to take over the family business,
Barber Dairies, based in Birmingham Alabama. He built it into the largest privately-owned
dairy in the southeast and then, late in life, assembled the world's most important
    collection of vintage motorcycles.

When the collection outgrew its original home in one of the old dairy warehouses,
he built Barber Motorsports Park on the outskirts of Birmingham. The park includes
one of the best race-tracks in the U.S., and the best motorcycle museum in the world.
The track and museum are set in a manicured landscape that puts every other U.S.
race-track to shame. After spending $60 million of his own money on the park, Barber
essentially gave it to the city of Birmingham and the state of Alabama.

10.) "Big" Bill France - Lesson: If you build it, they will come

France is best known as the father of NASCAR the builder of Daytona International
Speedway, France was also a motorcycle racer. The city of Daytona Beach convinced
the AMA to hold the 200-mile national championship race there in 1937. After a few
lackluster years, it seemed Daytona would lose the race, until France was convinced
to become the promoter. He continued to promote the race until, realizing that it
could not continue on the beach, he built the speedway. He opened his track in 1959
and the AMA saw the light and moved the race there two years later. Under France's
control, the race became an international sensation.

    Mark Gardiner
    was a successful
    ad agency creative director
and business owner before giving up that career
to pursue his dreams as a motorcycle racer. He has written an evocative memoir of
    a life in racing,
    Riding Man
. He's one of the world's most widely published motorcycle journalists.

Distance Learning MBA Programs - Closing the Gap

Thanks to the Internet, distance learning MBA programs have now become a mainstay
of furthering an individual's education. Those looking to earn their Master's degree
in a time and cost effective manner now have every opportunity to do so. With a
curriculum that is every bit as solid as an onsite college, one can gain all the
skills they need to push a career to unbelievable heights.

A Master's degree in Business Administration is easily one of the most sought
after certifications for those in the business world. Many are daunted by the heavy
price tag that can come with such an endeavor; but when considering the salary of
those with this degree under their belt, it is easy to see an MBA is well worth
    the investment.

Deciding to pursue a Master's degree can be time consuming, especially for the
busy working adult. That is why distance learning MBA programs make perfect sense.
No matter where one is in the world, there is an opportunity to attend a top business
college without the hassle of travel or relocation.

Earning this type of degree is often cost effective as well. With none of the
added extras that come with attending an onsite campus, students can expect to pay
only for the resources they use. Classes are often broken up into small units called
modules that are easy to follow and self-explanatory.

At the same time, earning a Master's degree online still offers a good amount
of cyber classroom instruction for students. Teachers and lecturers often use webcams,
chat rooms, forum boards and even online interactive whiteboards to communicate
classroom concepts over long distances. Students can stay in touch with their instructors
via email, chat or even phone.

Those who obtain their Master's degree in Business Administration open up a world
of opportunity for themselves. It has been found that there are simply more options
for the individual with an MBA than those with extensive years of experience alone.
Individuals already employed in the business world frequently see a number of doors
on their career path swing wide open.

Distance learning MBA programs are also the preferred method of learning for
a majority of companies that offer tuition reimbursement programs to employees.
Not only is it cost effective; individuals can keep their regular schedules without
missing too much in the way of valuable work time. This makes the MBA even more
obtainable for even the busiest working adult.

No matter what the field, an MBA can prove quite advantageous. Those working
in finance, marketing, non-profit organizations and even personal business can benefit
greatly with this knowledge backing them all the way. The MBA can even be useful
for those in government jobs as well.

Before doing anything, smart individuals will ask themselves what qualities make
them a good candidate for an MBA program. The basic qualities of someone who might
be good for an MBA program are that of honest people who enjoy working as a team
as well as the many aspects of leadership.

When opting for this type of program, it is also important to check out a number
of online MBA programs before applying to any one school. One should ensure that
the Master's degree a student earns is fully recognized. Legitimate institutions
should accredit an online course. Any offers for financial aid may be rescinded
if a program cannot show it is accredited.

The career opportunities that can be achieved with distance learning MBA programs
are nearly impossible to pass up. Never before has there been a time when earning
a Master's degree could be so advantageous in both time spent and potential income
    earned.

MBA Admissions For Low GMAT Or GPA Applicants

Are your numbers really so bad? It may be difficult to find average GPAs, but if you have a 2.6, you know it's low for almost any MBA program. Roughly, except for the most elite schools, a GPA below 3.0 warrants a deliberate effort to counterbalance.

    Looking closely at your numbers.

Which numbers are low - GMAT, GPA, or both? If only one of these numbers is low, at least the other number demonstrates your academic ability. Some people are simply not great standardized test-takers. A low GPA often is attributable to the simple fact that college students are still growing up. In fact, a 3.0 GPA that starts out below 3.0 and trends upward consistently, with the final semester or two in the 3.5 range or higher, is not nearly as worrisome as a GPA that trends in the opposite direction.

If both numbers are low, how do they break down? If your GMAT quant score was high and you had solid grades in quant courses in college, that's a plus, because MBA adcoms always look for evidence that the applicant can handle the mathematics involved. If it's the quant side that drags the numbers down, it's more of a problem. The point is, read the nuances of your scores. Assess and interpret the picture that emerges. Then develop an application strategy to address that issue. Low numbers vary significantly in the impression they create, depending on the details.

    Addressing low quant scores.

Register at your local community college ASAP for calculus and/or statistics if you haven't taken them -- and earn an A! If you earned a D or F in other quant-oriented courses, consider re-taking them as well. If you have time to take additional quant-oriented courses, such as finance or accounting, it will help even more. In your essays, highlight quantitative aspects of your work to demonstrate proficiency. If you have some say in what your recommenders write, ask them to confirm your quantitative ability.

    Addressing low verbal scores.

Consistently low verbal scores will raise a red flag. Your essays are the ideal place to neutralize this concern. They should be expressive and flawlessly written. You also should select examples and anecdotes that highlight your communication skills. So excellent essays are a must. Looking beyond the essays, ask recommenders to comment positively on your verbal skills. Finally, you can take a course at a local college that involves substantial writing, either business related or other.

Evaluating the numbers in the context of your demographic profile.

You must first understand your demographic profile vis-a-vis the MBA applicant pool for your chosen school(s). Regardless of how rare a demographic profile may be, an adcom will not admit an applicant if it believes he cannot handle the coursework. Beyond that, it's really a matter of supply-and-demand. Demographics encompass your ethnicity, nationality, gender, and industry background. It is well known that Indian engineers and computer scientists with high numbers are over-represented in the applicant pool, as are white and Asian male investment bankers with high numbers.

Using your essays to counteract the low numbers.

With low numbers, your first hurdle is demonstrating you're qualified. Your low scores may now be "understandable," but they won't excite the adcom, so your work experience must. "Mine" your work experience for all evidence of accomplishment, leadership, and impact. Show through anecdotes and examples that you are a person who makes a difference on the job beyond what's expected. Exceptional contribution and leadership as a volunteer or in another non-work activity also serve this purpose, though with the low numbers, strong work experience is still essential.

    Selecting the right schools.

All schools do not give the "pillars" of your application - GMAT, GPA, work experience - the same weight. Columbia and Stanford will put more weight on the GMAT and/or GPA than others. Some will be more interested in the specific qualities, experience, and demographic factors you bring than will others. Select programs that meet your learning needs. Then focus on those that take a more holistic view of applicants and/or those that favor your distinguishing characteristics.

    The optional essay.

If your numbers are below the 80% range, they warrant an acknowledgement and an explanation. Similarly, if extenuating circumstances caused the low numbers, those circumstances are an important part of your profile. The optional essay is often the place to make these statements. If you write the optional essay, make it short and straightforward. Provide a brief explanation, take responsibility, and focus on evidence of your talents that counters the impression made by the low stats.

Creating a thoughtful strategy to counteract the effect of low numbers can transform you from a non-viable to a viable applicant at the schools of your choice. However, it's up to you to show the adcom that the numbers don't define you.

While increasing your career options is probably the main reason individuals choose to obtain an MBA distance education, many people want the education to give them the knowledge, credibility, and expertise to effect positive change in today’s society. For example, with an MBA in education, you can be in a position to promote positive changes in the educational system. In business, instead of complaining about office policies and procedures, you will have the background knowledge to successfully suggest improved working conditions for both employees and employers. Maybe you are interested in improving healthcare for the elderly, but patient care is not your cup of tea. (You faint at the sight of blood or needles.) You have realistic ideas to keep quality care up, and patient costs down, but you need the education to give your recommendations voice. Thus, if you want to make a difference within your community, consider mastering your career with an MBA distance education.

In summary, regardless of your personal motivations, an MBA distance education will help you master your personal or occupational goals. Maybe you aspire to a position of leadership like a future presidency. If so, online courses are available to reach your leadership goals. However, for the majority of career-minded individuals, job security is a concern, or the career is a venue for effecting positive changes within a community. Promote your potential and master your career with an MBA distance education.

Is a Distance Learning MBA Program For You?

Distance learning programs are becoming more and more readily available from universities all over the United States. There are some universities that are dedicated solely to distance learning programs, which are usually completely based on the World Wide Web. Class presentations, delivery, and even assignments and projects are done via the web. Of course, distance learning MBA programs are not going to be ideal for everyone, because of their distant nature.

Human beings have different learning styles; distance learning students have to be able to apply themselves and manage their own time effectively. This is the best style of learning for people who are self starters and do not need as much motivation or individualized attention as other people. There is not an advantage to either one; depending on how you like to learn and be taught, distance learning MBA programs or traditional MBA programs might suit you differently.

If you are thinking about going into a distance learning MBA program or something similar, be sure to consider it from all angles. These distance learning courses are usually a bit more expensive than other courses, and class availability is a bit more limited than it is with the traditional learning approaches. However, the benefits of obtaining a distance learning MBA degree are endless when it comes to the flexibility and freedom that goes along with it.

To find the distance learning program that is best for you, do plenty of research beforehand. There are some universities, like the University of Phoenix that are completely based on distance learning programs and you must pay for this convenience. If you can get into a distance learning program for your MBA at one of the colleges or universities near you and perhaps attend a few seminars or sessions a semester, you could probably save quite a bit of money on your class credits.

Is a distance learning MBA program for you? You will never know until you try; if the freedom is something that might help you find the time and devotion necessary to get through an MBA course of study, then it is something that should at least be seriously considered. Put some time and effort into your distance learning MBA program, and you will reap all of the benefits of a traditional education and more.

MBA Guidance - What Makes A Good Profile In The Eyes Of Mba Admission Committees

You may have 8 years of work experience and a 700+ GMAT score, but you must also have a very good profile to make the cut for Top B-Schools. So what consists of a good profile? Below I am outlining some things which will help you boost your profile. Remember Profile is something which is shown in your essays which I will talk about in later articles, but this will give you a good idea on what more you may need to do to make an attractive profile. I have tried to put these points in what I think is their order of importance:

    - Work-ex: Work experience is ofcorse a very important part of your whole profile. Your work experience should show growth in your career, substantiate your ambitions/decisions, your dependability and progress. [Later in when I discuss about Essays, I will discuss in detail about this]. The more work experience you have the more probability that you can put the above parameters in the right perspective. If you have ever been in a lead position that will certainly help.

    - Challenges: Challenges faced by you in life and at work, how good were you at handling them. The challenges could be interpersonal like firing a close friend, or during work like Gail Waynand fighting for Howard Roark [FountainHead by Ayn Rand, a very interesting read, I highly recommend it]. If you pulled through the challenges and still have a balanced career then thats a commendable effort. The difficult situation actually made a better person out of you. This will give your essay a good garnish, but you need to have something (like a certificate) to back this up.

    - Diversity: Diversity of cultural, social and technical know-how is a much appreciated skill. Ofcorse too many jumps from one job to another shows instability and indecision. But wider experience in the profession, international exposure etc give a huge boost to the profile's attractiveness. Good understanding of the culture, languages and history of the internationally visited countries adds a lot of gun powder into your profile.

    - Community Service/Voluntary services: Being active in community services, volunary organizations is a globally appreciated quality. Great regards are always due to those who take time off and help others. MBA committee is no different. The greater participation you have in community service, the greater respect your profile holds. Apart from participation if you have managed an even such as a blood donation drive, vaccination drive etc, extra value is added to your profile since it gives the idea that you are driven and capable of management.

    - Sports: Sports give an all rounder feel to the personality [All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy]. Solo sports are good to have, but excellence in team sports shows that you are a team player and this is an important quality of a future manager. Well at least in the eyes of the Ad Com it is. If you have captained in a team sport its another star added to your profile and if you have ever won a tournament as a captain, there is another star for you. Make sure you make a note of these in your resume too.

    - Languages: A very very handy tool on your resume. Speaking ability of more than 1 language gives quite a thrust to your chances of impressing the ad com. Especially if you are looking for non-US (non-English) B-School like Insead, your capability of communicating in French will give you an edge over other applicants. Similarly if you want to apply in a top Chinese school, your familiarity with Mandarin will go long ways in the eyes of the adcom.

    - Entrepreneurship: Ever tried doing a business of your own? If you did, this shows a lot about you. Even if you failed, the effort counts. Failure does hamper the effects a bit, but it can be attributed to in-experience, finances ... or other things. The important point is that you showed the business acumen and gained some valuable experience from it. This definitely helped you in becoming a better person, which in Ad Comms eyes is a good thing.
